Individual seeds, station sown with a little patience, has given a 100% germination rate of thick uniform roots which are easily 60cm long and which taste delicious. The biggest problem I have with these is that they grow deeper than my raised beds, and into the heavy clay soil underneath which means I have to fight them to harvest them. Seems to make the reward taste better though, and have planned these in for this year as well.
I bought these seeds a number of years ago when trying my hand at an allotment. With little preparation and even less time and skill they were planted. Then, and each year since then, they’ve performed brilliantly and my involvement seems incidental. Moved house last year with a garden made of clay in a very exposed position. Gladiator fought it’s way through this and, apart from a few the size of carrots, produced a mass of huge tasty parsnips that lasted for ages right through the winter.
Just pulled my first Gladiator Parsnip of the season. Just the one was big enough to feed 6 of us with a roast dinner yesterday!. I've grown Gladiator for 3 years now and I'm growing them in 18" deep raised beds - they always come out large and tasty and I've never had problems with germination.... oh and they are delicious (especially if you can wait until after the first frosts have hit.
