This is not just a green manure – it also acts as a biofumigant for the soil. Biofumigants suppress various soil borne pests and diseases by releasing naturally occurring compounds.

The foliage must be crushed or finely chopped for it to release a natural gas (isothiocyanate) which effectively reduces and suppresses a range of harmful nematodes and diseases in the soil.

The combination of biofumigation plus the digging in of the green material, increases beneficial soil microbes, which out-compete pathogen microbes helping to keep soil diseases down.

A very easy and quick crop - does exactly what marshalls say it does. One of the easiest green manures I have tried. Also, does not spread everywhere if you leave it to flower and seed, unlike Phacelia.

Natural Green Manure & Biofumigant

 

SOW OUTDOORS - March-October thinly, direct into the required position, ½in (1cm) deep. Keep soil moist at all times. October sowings can be overwintered in mild areas.

DIG IN - Before plants set seed. Foliage should be crushed or chopped  finely for best results.

HEIGHT- 24-36in (60-90cm)             

 

TIP - Use a strimmer or lawn mower to finely chop the foliage.
